Google AI Mode Now Serves Up to Four Ads Per Query

Google is now displaying as many as four ads inside AI Mode responses for a single query, up from the one to three that users typically saw. Sachin Patel captured a screenshot of a four-ad AI Mode result, which circulated on Search Engine Watch.

The change follows Google's statement on its earnings call that it would show more ads, more often, in AI Mode. The company has officially run four ads on standard search results since 2016, so the format itself is not new, but its extension into AI Mode answers is.

Google has also signalled that multiturn ads, placed on follow-up queries, are coming to the US. For brands, the shift means AI Mode answers are becoming a paid surface as well as an organic one, and the space above and around citations is filling with sponsored placements.
