Google AI Overviews Now Include External Links in Over 25% of Answers
New data from Peec AI shows that Google has sharply increased the share of AI Overviews that contain external links, rising from close to 0% to more than 25%.
Malte Landwehr, who runs Peec AI, posted the figures on X, writing that Google had massively increased the number of external links within AI Overview answers. The chart he shared tracks the change over time.
The finding runs against the recent pattern of Google linking out less often from search results, and it suggests that AI Overviews may be becoming a more viable surface for brands to earn citations and referral traffic.
