Google Moves Brand AI Overviews to Right Column

Google has shifted AI Overviews for many brand-related searches into the right-hand column of desktop results, replacing the knowledge panel that previously sat there. The change was spotted by Chris Long and David McSweeney, who noted that brand queries now surface an AI-written summary in the side panel rather than at the top of the main results.

The move means a search for a brand such as Apple now shows an AI Overview in the right column where a knowledge panel used to appear, with the main results left largely free of the AI summary. Some brand searches still show the overview further down the page rather than in the panel.

For brands, the shift puts an AI-generated description of the company in the spot that once held structured knowledge panel data. That gives Google's AI more control over the first impression of a brand in search, and reduces the prominence of the brand's own site copy in that position.
