Five AI search metrics for tracking client pipeline

A growth consultancy has published a five-metric framework for checking whether AI search work is reaching buyers, after a client's organic sessions and rankings rose while pipeline fell 18% over two quarters. The client had gained 12 new page-one terms since spring, but all of them were informational searches. When its top five buyer prompts were run across four AI assistants, the company appeared in three of 20 answers.

The first measure is brand presence rate: the share of answers that name the company, tracked separately from linked citations. Prompts should reflect buying intent, such as "best contract management software for mid-market legal teams", and be repeated weekly so changes can be compared.

The second is answer accuracy. One Series A client was named in 11 of 20 answers, but only four described it correctly: assistants positioned it as an enterprise product when it sold to companies with fewer than 200 employees. After the company description was made consistent across sources the models read, 10 of 11 mentions were accurate six weeks later and demo-to-opportunity conversion recovered the following quarter.

The remaining measures cover AI referral sessions in GA4, branded search in Search Console, and a self-reported attribution field on inbound forms. Across the consultancy's clients, AI referral sessions have converted at three to five times the rate of organic sessions. One client added an AI option to its "How did you hear about us?" field in April; by July, nine of 54 new opportunities had selected it, and those deals closed 30% faster than the rest of the inbound group.

The reported timelines are two to six weeks for brand presence and answer accuracy to improve, four to eight weeks for AI referral conversions, and eight to 12 weeks for branded search. The consultancy warns against promising clients that pipeline will follow that schedule, and says that if nothing else has improved after 90 days, the prompts and answers should be reviewed again.
