Semrush adds a Sources report to Prompt Tracking for AI citation research
Semrush has added a Sources report to its Prompt Tracking tool, showing which domains and pages AI platforms cite when answering a set of tracked prompts. The report sits inside Position Tracking, where campaigns are set up by choosing an AI platform, a location and a list of prompts, then collecting daily snapshots.
The report breaks citations down by source type, page and domain. In the example Semrush uses, a 20-prompt campaign in Google AI Mode surfaces 49 source pages, with ecommerce and retail sites accounting for 76% of them and knowledge bases 6%. The same prompts in ChatGPT surface 40 source pages, where knowledge bases make up 33% and retail 38%.
Each page and domain row shows how many tracked prompts it was cited for and how often the brand appeared in the associated answers. Semrush points to sources with a high citation count and a low brand mention rate as outreach targets, since they are shaping answers that skip the brand. A "Get mentions" panel lists the prompts a page was cited for and suggests actions such as product schema or buyer-focused content.
The distinction matters because citations and mentions are not the same thing: a site can be cited without the brand being recommended, and a brand can appear in an answer without its own page being cited. Semrush says the report updates daily and can be exported to Excel, CSV or Google Sheets, or scheduled.
