Foundation data: only 10% of AI citations point to brand-owned domains
Foundation has published findings from a B2B AI visibility study covering 50 brands, 5.1 million AI responses and 57.2 million citations. Only 10.15% of those citations pointed to brand-owned domains, and for unbranded queries the figure fell to roughly 2.2%.
The agency also analysed more than 12,000 B2B pages to see what gets linked, and found content built around stats and data topped the list. Separate analysis of over 8,500 bottom-of-funnel B2B keywords showed some Subreddits, such as /r/CRM, winning SERP placements for sales-related queries.
The argument for brands is that distribution, not just publishing, drives the citations and backlinks that feed AI answers. Foundation points to Ramp's Economics Lab, whose AI Index tracks business spend and now appears on the Bloomberg Terminal, as an example of a company turning its own data into a citable asset.
For marketers, the practical implication is that a single heavyweight asset per month, pushed across several channels over time, is more likely to earn the citations that compound than a steady stream of posts shared once.
