Google launches Universal Cart in Search and Gemini across the U.S.
Google has begun rolling out Universal Cart in the United States, an intelligent shopping cart that lives inside Google Search and the Gemini app. The feature runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and arrived just ahead of the holiday shopping season.
Shoppers can collect products from several retailers in one cart and pay for everything in a single checkout, with Google Pay handling payment. The cart tracks price changes on saved items and on past purchases, and applies available promo codes automatically at checkout.
Retailers signed up at launch include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair, along with a broad set of Shopify merchants. Google first described the concept in May and has now put it into production.
For brands, the change pushes product data and promotional feeds further into the transaction itself. Being present and correctly described in the catalogue that feeds a single cross-retailer checkout matters more than winning a click to an individual storefront.
