Winning AI search visibility does not guarantee B2B sales, analysis finds

Ranking well in Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity does not by itself win B2B buyers. Buyers who arrive from an AI answer still have to understand an offering, check its claims and decide to act, and a website that makes that work hard loses them before sales ever hears from them.

The numbers behind that are stark. Research from 6sense puts nearly 70% of the B2B buying process as complete before a buyer contacts a seller, and 81% already have a preferred vendor at that first conversation. Meanwhile the median B2B session lasts 78 seconds, according to Databox, and Contentsquare recorded a 7% year-on-year fall in average session duration.

Cognitive-load testing is the proposed remedy: measuring how much mental effort a visitor spends to understand, trust and act on a site. Two buyer types matter most. One is the researcher who has already read analyst reports and AI comparisons and wants specifics such as methodology, security and implementation requirements rather than broad claims. The other is the late stakeholder who arrives at the final presentation and tries to reconstruct the whole story from scattered pages.

For brands chasing citations in AI answers, the point is that a mention only pays off if the landing page converts the resulting visit. Vague navigation, overlapping product categories and gated demo forms add effort at exactly the moment a buyer is checking whether the vendor is credible.
