Google tests AI Overview citation cards at the bottom of desktop answers

Google is testing a layout that moves AI Overview citation cards from the right-hand side of the answer to a stacked block at the bottom of the response on desktop. The right-side citation bar disappears in the test, and a "show all" control expands the full list of sources underneath the answer.

Glenn Gabe spotted the variation and posted screenshots, noting that inline links still work on hover while the larger citation area sits below the text. He said the links look more enticing in that position. Google has run similar bottom-of-answer tests at least twice before, in September 2025 and March 2026.

The change matters for brands chasing citations in AI answers because placement affects how visible a source is. A collapsed bottom block hides citations until a reader clicks to expand, whereas the right-side cards are visible as soon as the answer loads. If Google adopts the layout, the click-through value of a citation could depend on whether the panel is expanded by default.
